The Duchy of Tyrros
The Land of Blood Opals

Situated on the Tyrrosian Peninsula, an elongated mass of land in the southern hemisphere, the Duchy of Tyrros remains an enigma to most of Iskandria. While its borders are well-defined, mostly due to the dense jungles that extend across most of its territory, the true nature of Tyrros lies not in its geography, but in the peculiar crimson gems known as blood-opals that are its primary export and the very cornerstone of its society. These opals, veined with a deep, unsettling red that pulses faintly, are more than mere minerals; they are the heart of Tyrrosian power, imbued with an essence that outsiders find both fascinating and deeply disturbing.
The origins of Tyrros as an independent country are rooted in a series of ancient, brutal conflicts known as the Wars of Vein and Stone. Countless fragmented tribes, each isolated by the unforgiving jungle terrain, vied for control of the scarce, rich veins where the blood-opals naturally formed. It was only through the ascent of the Blood Dukes – a lineage believed to possess a unique, inherent connection to the opals themselves – that a unified duchy emerged. These early rulers, with their grim rituals and unwavering focus on the extraction and refinement of the gems, established a society where devotion to the blood-opals and the sacrifices required to empower them became the state religion, a stark and unyielding faith known as the Covenant of the Deep Vein.
Society in Tyrros is structured rigidly around the production and spiritual significance of the blood-opals. Each noble house traces its lineage not just by ancestry, but by the purity and potency of the blood-opals they control, passed down through generations. Commoners, bound by ancient oaths, labor in the perilous opal mines, their lives inextricably linked to the prosperity of the duchy. The highest religious order, the Sanguine Priesthood, oversees the arcane rites necessary to draw out the opals' full potential, ceremonies rumored to involve far more than simple incantations. Outsiders often view Tyrros with a mix of awe and trepidation, aware of the duchy's wealth but profoundly unsettled by the grim devotion that underpins it.
Despite its insular nature and unsettling practices, the Duchy of Tyrros maintains a powerful, if uneasy, presence on the continent. Its blood-opals are highly sought after in certain circles, not just for their beauty but for their alleged properties in obscure magical practices, making Tyrros a critical, if unsettling, trade partner. Its dense jungle terrain and the unwavering, almost fanatical, loyalty of its populace, ensure its sovereignty against any external threat, coupled with a powerful navy that doesn’t hesitate sinking any foreign ship seen in their waters. Yet, one cannot help but wonder what true price is paid, in blood and spirit, for the wealth and stability of this peculiar, gem-veined realm.
