The Vormyr
Twisted Ancients, or something else?

The first expedition to ever return from the Frozen Wastes of Jhasaris, reports having met multiple times with a horrifying form of humanoid creatures named the Vormyr. Appearing to be something resembling humanoid lampreys, with greasy, speckled grey hides and round mouths of needle-sharp teeth, they have only ever been found within the cold confines of Jhasaris, which makes them the subject of dark speculation on the part of the few historians to have endeavored to assemble the fragmentary history of that lost continent. It is suspected that these are the devolved and twisted descendants of the ancient race that once populated that place, the wretched forms in which they now exist a twisted mockery of a bygone folk brought down by the unnatural cold.
The Vormyr appear to be ambush predators, their pale bodies providing excellent camouflage against the snow and ice as they lie in wait near treacherous crevasses or the crumbling entrances to submerged ancient ruins. Tales speak of Vormyr emerging silently from beneath thin ice, their rasping breath visible for a fleeting moment before they strike, seeking to drag their prey into the frigid blackness.
Their connection to the lost Jhasari civilization is still nothing more than mere conjecture, though, born from reports that observed them often haunting the frozen remains of that ancient culture. It is reasonable to think that any intelligent creature would seek refuge from the cold among the ruins of the past, though. Still, it is theorized that the very curse that plunged Jhasaris into its eternal winter may have also twisted the original inhabitants into these monstrous shapes. Whether they retain any spark of their former intellect is unknown, but their eyes, often described as milky and unblinking, seem to hold a profound, ancestral rage, or perhaps just a predatory emptiness. They have been seen wielding primitive weapons and clothing, but if their culture hasn’t progressed from that point due to their environment or a lack of intellect is pure conjecture.
Regardless of their origin, the Vormyr are openly aggressive, and don’t hesitate to attack on sight, making them yet another impediment to exploring their ancient homeland.
